ABOUT ME:

Sarah Sterner

P H O T O G R A P H Y

Sarah Sterner is a 24 year old New York City based photographer. She graduated from Parsons The New School for Design in 2013 with a BFA in Photography and currently works as Studio Coordinator at Industria Superstudio.

Sarah's work revolves primarily around dance. After growing up around a professional dance company, but not being blessed with the gift of the dance, Sarah chose to channel her passion and years of experience as a dance viewer into the process of creating photographs of dance and the dancers she grew up watching.

Sarah shot her senior thesis in rehearsal with American Ballet Theatre for 1 year. She has also photographed for the Paul Taylor Dance Company, the Baryshnikov Arts Center, Carrie Ahern Dance, Mazzini Dance Collective, Metamorphosis, New York Theatre Ballet, Intermezzo Dance Company and choreographer Benjamin Millepied amongst others. Her images have appeared in Dance Magazine and TimeOut NY. In 2012 Sarah's work with the Mazzini Dance Colletive was displayed in the gallery at Dance New Amsterdam. Images from her series with American Ballet Theatre were displayed at the Milk Gallery and as of Spring 2014 these images were displayed in the MaxMara flagship store on Madison Avenue.

Sarah's perspective towards dance hovers between subjective and objective, as she is neither an uniformed viewer nor over-invested ballerina. Sarah's photographs of dance teeter between a traditionally documentary style, while maintaining the delicacy and poetry of a fine art perspective. It is her hope that these images not only find their place in the hearts of the dancers, and in the timeline of dance history, but that they also serve to draw in the viewer, and give them pause to revel in the moments of grace and passion that flow through every dance.
